Cbs - New Yorker Columnist Says Cbs-cnet Merger Wont Fly

In his popular "The Financial Page" column for The New Yorker, James
Surowiecki writes in the June 9 edition that CBS's $1.9-billion purchase of the
online company CNET is unlikely to make money for the broadcasting company.
Surowiecki writes that the deal's rationale rests on "the myth of synergy" but
that in practice few companies have been "able to take acquired firms and
improve their performance and profitabiliity." Moreover, paying a 40-percent
premium for the publicly traded company puts the onus on CBS to increase CNET's
value substantially. "If CBS and CNET had simply agreed to cross-promote each
other's brands and distribute each other's content, CBS would have had many of
the benefits of merging without the costs." Surowiecki also suggests that CBS
may have bought CNET simply to show shareholders that it is growing and
revitalizing itself. But, he concludes, "Deals like the CNET acquisition are a
bit like an aging outfielder taking steroids in order to stave off the
boobirds. The difference is that steroids usually work."

Cynthia Nixon Denies Breast Enlargement

‘Sex and the City’ star Cynthia Nixon has denied reports that she underwent breast enlargement surgery after she had completed filming the recent movie.
According to a report by the New York Post, Nixon went to the Roosevelt Hospital in NYC to undergo “breast augmentation,” and made sure she did it “on the quietest day of the week.”
The 42-year-old told the New York Daily News, “I was in the oncology department. I guess they think that means ‘plastic surgery.’”
She adds, “If I was going to get a boob job, wouldn’t it make sense that I’d get it before ‘Sex and the City?”
Nixon, who appears naked in the new movie, explained that that story “would be annoying and disheartening in any case, but particularly [more so] because I’ve been open about my breast cancer.”

Devotchka formed in Denver, CO, and included Nick Urata on vocals, guitar, and trumpet; violinist/accordionist Tom Hagerman; sousaphone/bass actor Jeanie Schroder; and drummer Shawn King. Supporting musicians revolved in and out of the eclectic group's card, tributary such sounds as strings and bazoukis. While some described Devotchka's sound as polka-rock or circus music, the ring was actually a cross-pollination of legion influences, including club, spaghetti Westerns, and the immigrant dance music of Eastern Europe. Supermelodrama, their self-released 2000 debut, garnered legion accolades, and the band toured in support of the record with such luminaries as Calexico, 16 Horsepower, Flogging Molly, and Archer Prewitt. Una Volta followed in May 2003. Issued by the Boulder, CO, indie Cicero, Devotchka promoted the record album through a tour with illustrious burlesque/fetish entertainer Dita Von Teese.

Leona Lewis - Lewis Offered 2million Fee For Gig

British singing sensation LEONA LEWIS is reportedly set to score a huge $2 million (GBP1million) fee for any future personal appearances - putting her in the same league as legendary former BEATLE SIR PAUL MCCARTNEY.

The Bleeding Love star has enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame since winning U.K. talent show The X Factor in 2006 - and can demand huge amounts of cash to perform intimate gigs for wealthy fans.

The star has been offered a $2 million (GBP1 million) personal appearance fee to play a small set for an unknown bidder, according to Britain's Daily Mirror newspaper.

A source tells the publication, "Leona is one of the most sought after stars around. She has little say in the fee charges - big money sponsors literally name their fee and her management respond accordingly.

"She is adamant much of the profit goes straight back to her favourite charities."

Lewis, who has hit the top spot in both the U.K. and U.S. album charts with her debut LP Spirit, is reportedly worth $12 million (GBP6 million) - but gives most of her money away to charity organisations.
